Musical Mushrooms

Rainbow Lake Playground sculptureThere’s a new feature coming to Rainbow Lake Playground…and we don’t mind saying it’s going to be pretty awesome.

Artist Tylur French, who’s also building our Bike Gate sculpture, is putting together a new musical sculpture and pebble processor. The original sculpture we installed wasn’t able to withstand all the love and attention it got from the kids, and it was becoming a safety hazard. So we enlisted Tylur to make something sturdy, beautiful, and one-of-a-kind.

Metal mushroomsThe new sculpture will have multiple opportunities for music-making: these metal mushrooms will chime in different tones when hit with tubes attached to the sculpture.  Baskets, funnels, and valves will allow kids to control how many pebbles are moving through the sculpture at a time.  And it’ll be full of bright, vibrant colors like the rest of the playground.

Tylur and his crew are hard at work on the new sculpture, and you should expect to see it make its way onto the playground in a few weeks!

Did You Know?
The sand pit in The Big Green Mound goes through more than a ton of sand every month, thanks to our industrious playground users. This is just one example of ongoing maintenance needs for a space that’s already become beloved by the kids of Memphis. If you’d like to help keep Rainbow Lake Playground happy and well-maintained, why not drop a little change in our metaphorical sand bucket?
