Building a Buzz: Community Science for Mason Bee Health and Diversity
“Save the Bees” is a phrase used in many campaigns to raise awareness and promote solutions for aiding bee populations threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and disease dynamics.
In this encore Science Café, we will explore the broader diversity of bees in North America and all over the world, the roles bees have in shaping life on Earth as we know it, and how we can promote bee health and diversity in a time when their persistence in the landscape is imperiled. We’ll take a close look at a case study of mason bees to see the drivers of bee decline in action and discuss how community scientists can take part in monitoring bee health and diversity.
Dr. Kate LeCroy joined the faculty at Rhodes College after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University. Kate studies non-native mason bee proliferation and native mason bee population declines, partnering with hundreds of community scientists to make this research possible. Kate is eager to continue evaluating mason bee health and diversity in the Mid South by building community science partnerships.
