Soil and Microplastic Pollution: Their Impact on Our Environment and Ecosystems

Plastic is one of the most ubiquitous materials in our life. This Science Café explores the pressing issue of soil and microplastic pollution. This discussion will shine a light on how these pollutants specifically affect agricultural farms and surrounding ecosystems. We’ll explore what microplastics are, how they make their way into farm soils, and the important insights we’ve uncovered about their long-term effects on environmental health.

Dr. Jazaei is a UMRF Venture Professor and Assistant Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Memphis. His research focuses on water and contaminant transport in groundwater systems. His lab is currently addressing critical questions regarding microplastic pollution in agricultural farms, and he and his team are developing strategies to mitigate and remove it from the environment. Dr. Jazaei has established a nationally recognized microplastic research lab, attracting over $1.8 million in funding from agencies such as U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), as well as private industry partners Brown and Caldwell Inc.

Registration required (opens two weeks in advance)

Overton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012. With the generous support of our community, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife.

The Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.
