Cafe Conversations: Heather Nickels and Earnestine Jenkins

January 22, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free
Join us for this month’s Cafe Conversations featuring the Brooks’ Joyce Blackmon Curatorial Fellow in African American Art and Art of the African Diaspora, Heather Nickels, and Dr. Earnestine Jenkins, University of Memphis. Nickels will lead a discussion about her exhibition A Journey Towards Self-Definition: African American Artists in the Permanent Collection. The show is built around several themes of African American life throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, including legacy, history, community, politics and religion. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and learn about the limestone sculptures of William Edmondson, the lyrical paintings of Purvis Young, and the iconic images of Ernest C. Withers, along with several other artists you will want on your radar. Dr. Jenkins will discuss her research on 19th century self-taught African American photographers in Memphis. Free.
