Become a Part of Memphis History
One of the unsung treasures of our city is the Memphis & Shelby County Room at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. Almost anything you ever wanted to know about Memphis is contained in this fourth-floor archive. With collections of documents, photographs, and memorabilia about everything from the Memphis Belle to historic floods to the arts, the Memphis Room protects our collective civic memories.
When we began the Overton Park Stories project a few months ago, it seemed like a no-brainer to partner with the Memphis Room. And on Saturday, June 29, we’re doing just that.
From 1:00 – 4:00pm, staff from Overton Park Conservancy and the Library will be in the Memphis Room just waiting to hear your stories and see your photos from Overton Park. We’ll be scanning your photos and taking audio of your stories, which will become part of both the Overton Park Stories project and the Memphis Room’s Overton Park collection. Housing this information at the Memphis Room ensures that it will become a permanent part of the city’s history, and give future generations a window into why our park has been beloved for over 100 years.
Nothing is too large or too small to be considered for the project! You can drop by whenever you like, and explore a little part of Memphis while you’re there.
RSVPs aren’t necessary, but we’d love to get a ballpark idea of how many people to expect. Let us know you’re coming via Facebook.
The Memphis Room is located on the fourth floor of the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Avenue.
