Cafe Conversations with Amanda Lee Savage

How do we begin to think about de-colonizing contemporary art?  Historian and University of Memphis instructor Amanda Lee Savage will lead us in a thoughtful conversation around this topic using the exhibition Native Voices, 1950 to Now: Art for a New Understanding as the launching pad. This groundbreaking exhibition is the first to chart a development of contemporary Indigenous art from the United States and Canada from the 1950s to the present. Native Voices promotes a meaningful conversation about contemporary art and Indigenous perspectives and radically alters the way we think about contemporary American art and society. Along with her work at the University of Memphis, Ms. Savage co-authored, with the Chickasaw Nation, the Territorial Acknowledgement for the City of Memphis.  Her public speaking has included topics such as “Lessons on Land Acknowledgment” at the Memphis Performing Arts Summit and “But What Are We Thankful For? A History of Thanksgiving from an Indigenous Perspective” with Zyanya Cruz at the Community Speaker Series at Calvary Episcopal Church.
