Make plans to join us for the next event in the Cafe Conversation: Race, Art History, and the Museum series in collaboration with the University of Memphis Art History Department. Dr. William McKeown, Associate Professor, will lead the July 21 conversation.
This talk examines Carl Gutherz’s painting, I Promised the Missus I’d Bring Him Home (or Faithful Unto Death). We will see how its composition deliberately recalls Renaissance iconography, especially of Christ’s Deposition and Entombment, while perpetuating the myth of the ‘loyal slave.’ Gutherz’s painting will also be considered in relationship to the artist’s other Confederate-themed works and to Lost Cause imagery in general from post-Reconstruction America.
A Q&A will follow the presentation.
Complimentary beer and wine will be available for our members. $10 drink tickets will be available at the front desk for non-members.
