Preserving our Natural Heritage: The Legacy and Future of TDEC’s Division of Natural Areas
The beloved Old Forest in Overton Park is classified as a Natural Area by the Tennessee Department Environment and Conservation (TDEC). Who is TDEC and what do they do? At this Science Café, Roger McCoy will highlight the important work of the Bureau of Conservation, sharing research on rare species he’s worked with and the strategies used to protect natural communities. He will also provide insights into the process of selecting new natural areas for conservation. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn about the preservation of Tennessee’s unique ecosystems!
Roger McCoy is Director of Conservation and State Naturalist for TDEC. He has an M.S. in botany and worked with the Division of Natural Areas since 1998. With the other staff members from the division, Roger conducts rare species searches and monitoring and oversees rare species management on state natural areas. Some notable projects on which he has worked include community classification and rare species searches on a variety of lands including private lands, national parks, national and state forests, and Department of Defense lands. Roger has been the lead researcher on a variety of projects to assess the status of federally listed and candidate plant species.

Overton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012. With the generous support of our community, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife.
The Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.
