Dr. Jason Hoeksema | Department of Biology, University of Mississippi | The interaction between plants and mycorrhizal fungi
Hype versus reality in the wood-wide web: What do we really know about the function of mycorrhizal networks in forests?
In recent years, popular media have amplified claims about the “wood-wide web,” with the benefits of mycorrhizal connections between trees in forests being touted in TED talks, documentaries, podcasts, newspapers, magazines, and even television series. But are these claims actually supported by scientific evidence? In this discussion, Dr. Jason Hoeksema will walk us through the most popular claims being made, explain the relevant scientific studies, and help us to separate hype from reality.

Overton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012. With the generous support of our community, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife.
The Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.
