An update on the parking project

Overton Park Conservancy recently had our kickoff meeting with the City Engineering department to discuss the parking reconfiguration project. The City engineers have created an initial conceptual layout for the reconfiguration. The next step is to develop a scope of work that will inform the RFP for design firms. We estimate having a signed contract with a design firm in about six months, following a bidding and selection process. We anticipate that the design process will cost between $400,000 and $500,000.

Keeping the public informed and involved will be a key part of this project. The design firms’ scope of work will include public outreach and meetings. The project will be overseen by a committee with representatives from the Memphis Zoo, the City of Memphis, and Overton Park Conservancy. Together, we’re working on a communications plan that will keep all stakeholders informed throughout the process. Our goal is to provide regular updates to the public, as well as ample notice of opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

The construction project will come in phases, so that the Zoo’s main parking lot will never be completely closed. We also intend to work primarily in the off-season when demand for parking is lower. To develop a tree care plan, the City will consult with the Memphis Tree Board, an advisory group that makes recommendations for the care and maintenance of public trees.

We look forward to getting to work on this project, which will enhance the visitor experience at Overton Park and permanently return the Greensward to recreational use.
