Update: City Council resolution
Last night Memphis City Council passed a resolution ceding control of portions of the Greensward to the Memphis Zoo. This action raises many practical questions, including those relating to the maintenance of the Greensward, events scheduled for the space, and public safety. As Overton Park Conservancy works with the City and the Zoo to address these issues, please know that our board, staff, and major donors remain fully committed to shaping a bright future for the park. Our board will meet soon to discuss next steps.
In the meantime, we will soon release the parking consultants’ recommendations as planned. We’ll also continue with our many other initiatives, including enhancements to the Poplar/Cooper park entrance (for which First Tennessee Foundation recently committed $25,000), a BioBlitz public nature celebration set for April, and the spring re-opening of the Overton Park Community Farmers Market.
If you’d like to help out immediately, we’d love to see you at Friday night’s Cocktails for a Cause event. Come say hello, have a drink, and have your gift to the Conservancy matched by a generous donor.
