SUMMARY:Art & Aperitifs: Hohenburg Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an illuminating afternoon as the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art welcomes Rachel Stephens\, the University of Memphis’s 2025 Dorothy Kayser Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History\, for her talk\, “Tennessee Gentleman?: Renegotiating Andrew Jackson’s Legacy through Portraiture.” Stephens will explore the fascinating artistic relationship between Ralph E. W. Earl and Andrew Jackson\, a partnership that shaped the visual identity of one of America’s most polarizing presidents. \n\n\n\nWorking as Jackson’s personal artist across two decades\, Earl produced scores of portraits—including the Brooks’ own 1833 painting of Jackson\, the artist’s personal favorite. Through a critical reexamination of these works\, Stephens situates them within the context of Jackson’s role in Indigenous removal and enslavement\, inviting a deeper reflection on how portraiture both shapes and obscures historical legacies. \n\n\n\nRachel Stephens is a Professor of Art History at the University of Alabama\, where she has served on the faculty since 2013. A specialist in the art of the antebellum South\, she is the author of Selling Andrew Jackson: Ralph E. W. Earl and the Politics of Portraiture (2018) and Hidden in Plain Sight: Concealing Enslavement in American Visual Culture (2023). Her current research investigates antebellum painting in Tennessee and its intersections with enslavement and Indigenous displacement. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Lecture will be followed by a cocktail reception.

SUMMARY:Art and Aperitifs: Justin Williams discusses the Memphis Creative Community
DESCRIPTION:In this meditation on community\, Memphis-based painter and singer-songwriter Justin Williams traces his journey from music enthusiast to visual artist\, documenting moments from the city’s vibrant DIY creative scene. Drawing on works from his recent solo show STAGE\, Williams shares the challenges\, joys\, and collaborative spirit that shape his deeply human portraits of performers and the spaces they inhabit. \n\n\n\nThis special edition of Art & Aperitifs invites you to slow down and savor the day—with a signature aperitif in hand—as we consider why this moment feels especially alive for Memphis creatives and what forces are animating the scene right now. SUMMARY:Silk Watercolor Painting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:There’s nothing quite like painting on silk. In this hands-on\, adult workshop\, artist Phyllis Boger will guide participants through her process of creating watercolor-inspired landscapes on silk\, using a spray resist to control the flow of vibrant dyes across stretched fabric. The result? Bold\, luminous color that bursts with energy—and endless creative possibility. \n\n\n\n Each participant will create a display-ready piece of silk art—perfect as a wall hanging\, or one-of-a-kind gift. No prior experience is necessary; this workshop welcomes all skill levels and is designed to inspire play\, exploration\, and creativity. \n\n\n\nPhyllis Boger has been painting on silk and cotton since the 1980s\, first inspired by batiked fabrics brought home by her aunt during her foreign service travels. She has exhibited and taught in New England\, the Chicago area\, and Italy\, and now shares her expertise in the Mid-South. Phyllis holds a BFA from Barat College\, an art education degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and an MFA from Western Connecticut State University. \n\n\n\nAll materials are provided. Space is limited—register early to secure your spot and take home a beautiful piece of art you can wear or display.

SUMMARY:Echoes of Reflection: Spatial Polyphony and Antiphony
DESCRIPTION:Experience the museum as both a concert hall and a time machine in this special Horizon Series performance. Held in the Moss Gallery and inspired by its medieval artworks\, this all-instrumental program explores the ancient practices of polyphony and antiphony—sonic techniques that originated in sacred spaces and shaped the course of Western music. \n\n\n\nFrom the echoing halls of medieval cathedrals to the resonant chamber of the Moss Gallery\, musicians will create intricate layers of sound and spatial dialogue. Polyphony weaves together multiple melodies into one harmonious texture\, while antiphony engages in musical call-and-response that bounces across space. With no vocals\, every instrument becomes a voice—reviving the spirit of an era where music was both devotion and innovation. \n\n\n\nLove this event? Members get first access and discounted tickets to more than 400 programs and events each year. Join Art Club or a Collective today. \n\n\n\nFor $14 a month\, your whole family gets an all access pass to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art with a year full of things to do together.
