SUMMARY:Super Saturday - Yarn Mandala
DESCRIPTION:On March 28\, explore color\, culture\, and creativity during Super Saturday: Yarn Mandalas—a hands-on activity inspired by the work of Suchitra Mattai\, currently on view in the Rotunda. Each woven mandala becomes a personal expression of creativity and connection. \n\n\n\nIdeal for ages 5–12. All materials provided. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Summer Art Garden Opening: Wax Print Wonderland by Samilia Pelshak
DESCRIPTION:Wax Print Wonderland by Samilia Pelshak | Featuring Women Who Spin \n\n\n\nJoin us as Memphis’ art museum unveils the 2026 Summer Art Garden with Wax Print Wonderland\, a vibrant new installation by Memphis-based artist and designer Samilia Pelshak. A Nigerian-American artist and Memphis College of Art alumna\, Pelshak transforms the museum plaza into a surreal landscape inspired by African wax print textiles\, cultural heritage\, and childhood imagination. \n\n\n\nIn Wax Print Wonderland\, bold patterns\, braided triangular forms\, gourds\, and swirling textiles create an immersive environment rich with symbolism. DJs DJ Brillianaire\, DJ Zetta\, and DJ Rosamii bring their sonic perspectives to the plaza\, turning the garden into a vibrant space of sound\, movement\, and connection. \n\n\n\nGuests can also participate in a collaborative collage activation led by Memphis multimedia artist Patience Andrews\, creating a collective artwork inspired by women across artistic disciplines. An interactive networking experience facilitated by BitchBopz will also offer space for artists\, creatives\, and supporters to connect and build community. \n\n\n\nTogether\, the evening launches the Summer Art Garden while celebrating the creativity and leadership of women across the arts. SUMMARY:Art & Aperitifs: Hohenburg Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an illuminating afternoon as the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art welcomes Rachel Stephens\, the University of Memphis’s 2025 Dorothy Kayser Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History\, for her talk\, “Tennessee Gentleman?: Renegotiating Andrew Jackson’s Legacy through Portraiture.” Stephens will explore the fascinating artistic relationship between Ralph E. W. Earl and Andrew Jackson\, a partnership that shaped the visual identity of one of America’s most polarizing presidents. \n\n\n\nWorking as Jackson’s personal artist across two decades\, Earl produced scores of portraits—including the Brooks’ own 1833 painting of Jackson\, the artist’s personal favorite. Through a critical reexamination of these works\, Stephens situates them within the context of Jackson’s role in Indigenous removal and enslavement\, inviting a deeper reflection on how portraiture both shapes and obscures historical legacies. \n\n\n\nRachel Stephens is a Professor of Art History at the University of Alabama\, where she has served on the faculty since 2013. A specialist in the art of the antebellum South\, she is the author of Selling Andrew Jackson: Ralph E. W. Earl and the Politics of Portraiture (2018) and Hidden in Plain Sight: Concealing Enslavement in American Visual Culture (2023). Her current research investigates antebellum painting in Tennessee and its intersections with enslavement and Indigenous displacement. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Lecture will be followed by a cocktail reception.

SUMMARY:Lunar New Year Community Day
DESCRIPTION:Gallop into the Year of the Horse at Memphis’ art museum with our annual Lunar New Year Community Day! This vibrant\, family-friendly celebration features dynamic lion dancers\, elegant fan dance performances\, live music\, and interactive art-making activities inspired by Lunar New Year traditions. Enjoy delicious food and explore the sights and sounds of this beloved holiday celebrated across many Asian cultures. Whether you’re reconnecting with heritage or discovering something new\, come celebrate community\, culture\, and creativity with us! \n\n\n\nAfter the performances\, stick around for a screening of Far East Deep South\, a film exploring the often overlooked history of Asian immigrants in the American South. *Far East Deep South is mostly a family friendly film but please be aware there are a few racial slurs used in historical context as a few people give first-hand accounts of being subject to demeaning comments. \n\n\n\nLove this event?
