DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring evening with world-renowned metalsmith\, Sarah Perkins. \n\n\n\nIn this exclusive artist talk\, Perkins will share insights into her distinguished career and the highs and lows of building the Metal Museum’s new home in Overton Park. \n\n\n\nSarah Perkins received her BA in Art and German at San Diego State University and her MFA in metals at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She is Professor Emerita at Missouri State University where she taught from 1994 to 2017. She is a past member of the Board of Trustees of The Enamelist Society and currently serves on the Board of Directors at the Metal Museum. \n\n\n\nSarah is best known for her hand formed and enameled metal vessels and containers. She has shown her work in the USA\, India\, Canada\, Europe\, Korea and Taiwan\, ROC\, participating in over 300 competitive and invitational exhibitions. Her work has been featured in the periodicals: Metalsmith\, Ornament\, Glass on Metal\, and Craft Arts International and is published in a number of books including The Art of Enameling\, The Penland Book of Jewelry\, and Contemporary Enameling\, Art and Techniques. She was the juror for the Lark Publications book 500 Enameled Objects. Her work is in the permanent collections of a number of institutions including the Brooklyn Museum of Art\, the Long Beach Art Museum\, the Philadelphia Art Museum\, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, England. \n\n\n\nSarah was the recipient of a Mid-America Arts Alliance/National Endowment for the Arts regional award. She has been a Senior Artist in Residence at the Oregon College of Art and Craft and an Artist in Residence at the Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan\, ROC\, and at Sanskriti Foundation in New Delhi\, India. She was the 2019 Master Metalsmith at the Metal Museum in Memphis\, TN. She has taught numerous workshops on her enameling techniques at universities\, craft centers and guilds both in the USA and abroad.

DESCRIPTION:How does a photographer capture the “Mystery of the Ordinary”? In this edition of Ideas Over Lunch\, Czech-American Photographer Annette Fournet take us through her practice and world travels. Fournet is known by her signature black and white style with unique and captivating composition. What looks otherworldly through the eyes of the artist could be an ordinary object transformed by her lens. \n\n\n\nAnnette Fournet lives in Memphis\, Tennessee and in Prague\, Czech Republic. She is currently teaching photography at the University of Memphis. \n\n\n\nIn the early 1990s Annette Fournet began to photograph in Eastern Europe. Fascinated by the atmosphere of ‘suspended time’ cause by the isolation of the Iron Curtain\, Fournet witnessed the many changes in the former Czech Republic following the ”Velvet Revolution.” She found herself photographing\, with a sense of nostalgia and regret\, the transition–the disappearance of conditions both good and bad in the onslaught of change. DESCRIPTION:Your creative prime can begin at any age. You’re invited to get immersed into the artist process and build new skills through eight weeks of hands-on making.\n\n\n\nPrime Practice is an eight-week studio course for adults 55 and older who are ready to try something new\, strengthen their skills and connect with others. Choose printmaking with Vince Long\, watercolor with John Isaiah Kennedy or both. \n\n\n\nRegular creative practice can support well-being far beyond the studio. \n\n\n\nNo previous art experience is required. Materials are included\, and each two-hour session is designed to make participation comfortable and approachable. \n\n\n\nPrintmaking with Vince Long\n\n\n\nExplore four different approaches to printmaking while creating stationery you can use\, keep or give as a holiday gift. \n\n\n\nOver eight weeks\, artist and designer Vince Long will introduce screen printing\, block printing\, gel plate printing and experimental printing with found objects. Participants will create a stationery set using each technique and leave with four finished collections. \n\n\n\nLong is a Memphis-based artist\, designer and educator. He founded VL Print after graduating from the University of Memphis Fashion Design program. He also teaches at the University of Memphis\, sells his work through The Ugly Art Co. and works as an art handler. \n\n\n\nDesigned with accessibility in mind\n\n\n\nPrime Practice is designed to support a range of visual\, mobility and fine-motor needs. The class will also contribute to a larger collaborative work that Kennedy will complete in his studio. \n\n\n\nKennedy earned his BFA in studio art from the University of Tennessee at Martin and his MFA in painting from the University of Memphis. DESCRIPTION:On June 20\, dive into creativity with Super Saturday: Saltwater Paintings\, a hands-on artmaking experience inspired by the powerful photography in the exhibition Bodies of Water by David Uzochukwu. Using watercolor paint\, salt\, and watercolor paper\, kids will create their own dreamy waterscapes filled with movement\, mood\, and texture. \n\n\n\nAs the salt interacts with the watercolor\, magical patterns emerge—mimicking the rhythms and currents of the sea. Participants can even add mermaids or aquatic creatures to bring their ocean scenes to life! \n\n\n\nIdeal for ages 5–12. All materials provided. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required.
