SUMMARY:with abundance we breathe
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Suchitra Mattai’s with abundance we meet\, this singular musical performance offers a vibrant tribute to the voices and visions of South Asian composers within the classical tradition. Drawing on the themes of migration\, domesticity\, and fertility that permeate Mattai’s visual work\, the concert presents a sonic landscape that is equally expansive and boundary-defying. \n\n\n\nThrough an innovative program featuring works by Reena Esmail\, Philip Freihofner\, and Anish Pandit\, the performance highlights the depth and diversity of South Asian contributions to classical music—reimagining tradition through a contemporary lens. The evening includes rare pairings such as oboe and electronic gamelan\, creating a hypnotic fusion of timbre and rhythm that blurs the line between acoustic and digital\, past and present. \n\n\n\nImmersive\, reflective\, and boldly original\, this is more than a concert—it’s a celebration of abundance\, resilience\, and the ongoing evolution of classical music in a globalized world. Join us for an unforgettable evening where music becomes a meeting place of cultures\, histories\, and possibilities. \n\n\n\nThe museum and all its programs are made possible by the generous support of museum members. SUMMARY:Art & Aperitifs: Hohenburg Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an illuminating afternoon as the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art welcomes Rachel Stephens\, the University of Memphis’s 2025 Dorothy Kayser Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History\, for her talk\, “Tennessee Gentleman?: Renegotiating Andrew Jackson’s Legacy through Portraiture.” Stephens will explore the fascinating artistic relationship between Ralph E. W. Earl and Andrew Jackson\, a partnership that shaped the visual identity of one of America’s most polarizing presidents. \n\n\n\nWorking as Jackson’s personal artist across two decades\, Earl produced scores of portraits—including the Brooks’ own 1833 painting of Jackson\, the artist’s personal favorite. Through a critical reexamination of these works\, Stephens situates them within the context of Jackson’s role in Indigenous removal and enslavement\, inviting a deeper reflection on how portraiture both shapes and obscures historical legacies. \n\n\n\nRachel Stephens is a Professor of Art History at the University of Alabama\, where she has served on the faculty since 2013. A specialist in the art of the antebellum South\, she is the author of Selling Andrew Jackson: Ralph E. W. Earl and the Politics of Portraiture (2018) and Hidden in Plain Sight: Concealing Enslavement in American Visual Culture (2023). Her current research investigates antebellum painting in Tennessee and its intersections with enslavement and Indigenous displacement. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Lecture will be followed by a cocktail reception.
