SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy snacks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nWhere have all the oaks gone? How tree species have changed in the Old Forest since Larry Finch coached the Tigers [Encore!].\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForests are dynamic ecosystems changing constantly in response to natural and human-induced disturbances\, climate change\, and introduced plants and animals. One of the most concerning trends in eastern deciduous forests has been the lack of oak recruitment and the potential loss of ecosystem value these foundational species provide. Studies abound on the potential causes and consequences of oak loss in rural forests\, however\, little is known about oak-dominated urban forests. In this talk\, Eric Bridges will discuss the changing species composition and stand structure in the Old Forest State Natural Area and what these changes might mean for the future of oaks and native biodiversity in this and other urban forests.  \n\n\n\nDr. Eric Bridges is the Director of Operations & Capital Improvements for the Overton Park Conservancy in Memphis\, TN. He earned his B.S. in Forestry from Colorado State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Forestry from Mississippi State University where he studied urban forest economics and urban forest dynamics. Eric is a Society of American Foresters (SAF) Certified Forester and an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist. He has worked as a professional forester for 35 years in Alaska\, Colorado\, California and Tennessee. Eric volunteers for the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council\, teaches community-based urban forestry courses\, and was a founding member of the Memphis Tree Board. \n\n\n\nThis event is sold out! SUMMARY:Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy drinks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlash Floods: Rain\, Risk\, and Resilience\n\n\n\nFlash flooding\, known to scientists as Urban Pluvial Flooding\, is a type of sudden flooding that happens in cities due to heavy rain that falls very quickly—usually within a few minutes to a couple of hours. This intense precipitation creates a lot of stormwater\, which can lead to flooding either because water starts ponding in place\, or else because it overwhelms local drainage systems. As Memphians know\, flash floods can cause significant damage to property and even loss of life. \n\n\n\nIn this Science Café\, Dr. Claudio Meier will discuss urban resilience in the face of flooding\, and “grey” versus “green” stormwater management systems. He’ll also share insights he’s learned from his group’s research on quantifying extreme rainfall\, improving modeling\, and reducing the risks associated with urban pluvial flooding.  \n\n\n\nAs we approach World Water Day March 22nd\, this Science Café will highlight the critical importance of addressing flooding issues to ensure a sustainable future in our urban environments. \n\n\n\nDr. Claudio Meier is Professor of Civil Engineering at The University of Memphis. He is a fly fisherman who in his free time also happened to get a broad education as a Hydraulic-Hydrologic Engineer\, but with a twist (a PhD in River Ecology). He was digging streams in his backyard at age 9 (ouch\, those water bills…) and has never stopped researching hydraulics and hydrology since then. He has taught in Chile\, Mexico\, Italy\, and Tennessee\, and conducts research on extreme rainfall\, urban floods\, and river processes. \n\n\n\nRegistration opens 2 weeks in advance! \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Science Café Waitlist\n Want us to let you know if a spot becomes available? Enjoy drinks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nGrowing in the Wind: Watching a galaxy seed its environment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFar from being Kant’s “island universes\,” galaxies are at the heart of a dynamic ecosystem that spans the cosmos. Their stars produce heavy elements\, which in a giant recycling loop become parts of other stars and planets. Some of these elements are ejected out of galaxies into the vast space between them\, forming the extremely diffuse gas known as the intergalactic medium. So what’s going on in the biggest vacuum in the universe? Dr. David Rupke will introduce us to the intergalactic landscape and illustrate how astronomers are seeing it in action using ground- and space-based telescopes. \n\n\n\nDr. David Rupke grew up watching the sky using a small backyard telescope in rural Appalachia\, and has been privileged to have access to some of the best modern instruments–built by skilled scientists and engineers–to observe distant galaxies. He teaches physics\, astronomy\, and environmental science at Rhodes College\, and bikes through Overton Park most days on his way to work. \n\n\n\n\nSold Out\n\n\n\n\nRegistration opens two weeks in advance! SUMMARY:Love for the Land: An evening with Brooks Lamb & Home Place Pastures
DESCRIPTION:Family farms have long been a foundation of the American food system\, and few people know and love their land like those who have tended it for generations. But with pressure from industrial agriculture\, land loss\, and climate change\, family farmers face challenges in both making a living and stewarding their land. \n\n\n\nOn December 4\, join Overton Park Conservancy for a conversation with Marshall Bartlett of Home Place Pastures and Brooks Lamb\, author of “Love for the Land: Lessons From Farmers Who Persist in Place.” They’ll discuss the role of community in sustainable farming\, as well as making the transition from row crops to regenerative grazing. Guests will also get to sample some delicious food from Home Place Pastures! \n\n\n\n\nBuy tickets here!

No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nUpcoming Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Corals to Cholera: Maladies in a Changing Planet \n\n\n\nAs weather patterns and human distribution change globally\, so does the fate of infectious agents: from pathogens that decimate coral reefs to the infamous agent of cholera. In this Science Café\, Dr. Salvador Almagro-Moreno will discuss the emergence\, spread\, and evolution of infectious diseases in a changing planet\, especially those in ocean ecosystems that are experiencing the most drastic changes of all. This presentation will not just be a call for action\, but will also offer insights into solutions and potential approaches to tackle these complex issues.  \n\n\n\nDr. Salvador Almagro-Moreno is an Associate Member in the Host-Microbe Interactions Department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His lab seeks to understand bacterial pathogens all the way from the molecular level to how they are transmitted to humans. The lab investigates how disruptions to ecosystems by manmade perturbations or natural disasters can change these pathogens and the severity of disease outbreaks. With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.

SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy drinks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nUpcoming Speaker\n\n\n\nShape and Scales: Understanding Animal Movement Through Mathematics \n\n\n\nHave you ever strolled through the Memphis Zoo or Overton Park and wondered about the incredible diversity of animal shapes and sizes? These variations can often be traced back to the ancestors of modern species and the environments they’re adapted to. In this Science Café\, we’ll explore how the fields of vertebrate morphology and biomechanics quantify and compare body shapes\, revealing how these shapes directly influence animal movement. \n\n\n\nDr. Kelly Diamond of Rhodes College is an integrative biologist with extensive experience in studying the relationships among various snake groups\, investigating environmental factors that affect the migration of waterfall-climbing fish\, and developing innovative methods for automating the collection of shape data from 2D and 3D animal images. Currently\, she is focused on a variety of projects from fish swimming patterns to dog skull shapes and frog jumping performance. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions?
