SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy drinks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nUpcoming Speaker\n\n\n\nShape and Scales: Understanding Animal Movement Through Mathematics \n\n\n\nHave you ever strolled through the Memphis Zoo or Overton Park and wondered about the incredible diversity of animal shapes and sizes? These variations can often be traced back to the ancestors of modern species and the environments they’re adapted to. In this Science Café\, we’ll explore how the fields of vertebrate morphology and biomechanics quantify and compare body shapes\, revealing how these shapes directly influence animal movement. \n\n\n\nDr. Kelly Diamond of Rhodes College is an integrative biologist with extensive experience in studying the relationships among various snake groups\, investigating environmental factors that affect the migration of waterfall-climbing fish\, and developing innovative methods for automating the collection of shape data from 2D and 3D animal images. Currently\, she is focused on a variety of projects from fish swimming patterns to dog skull shapes and frog jumping performance. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Send us an email  \n\n\n\nPlease review our cancellation policy here. \n\n\n\nOverton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012. SUMMARY:Third Thursday Treks
DESCRIPTION:Join Conservancy staff on a walk while we discuss a specific ecological concept for the month. Walks scheduled for the third Thursday of each month August-November at 4pm. Registration will be open a week before each walk. \n\nThe Science of Forest Bathing \nThe Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku translates to “taking in the forest atmosphere\,” but is commonly called “forest bathing.” It’s the art of using all one’s senses to notice and appreciate the living forest\, and it has benefits for physical and mental health. But how exactly does forest bathing work on our minds and bodies? \nWe’ll explore the science of shinrin-yoku during the October Third Thursday Trek\, and then practice a mindful stroll to activate our senses. \n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\nTrek surfaces may include paved road\, limestone gravel trail\, and Old Forest natural trails with uneven surfaces. \nQuestions? Send us an email  \nSee our cancellation policy. \nOverton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012.
