SUMMARY:Science Café [Sold Out]
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy drinks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nGrowing in the Wind: Watching a galaxy seed its environment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFar from being Kant’s “island universes\,” galaxies are at the heart of a dynamic ecosystem that spans the cosmos. Their stars produce heavy elements\, which in a giant recycling loop become parts of other stars and planets. Some of these elements are ejected out of galaxies into the vast space between them\, forming the extremely diffuse gas known as the intergalactic medium. So what’s going on in the biggest vacuum in the universe? Dr. David Rupke will introduce us to the intergalactic landscape and illustrate how astronomers are seeing it in action using ground- and space-based telescopes. \n\n\n\nDr. David Rupke grew up watching the sky using a small backyard telescope in rural Appalachia\, and has been privileged to have access to some of the best modern instruments–built by skilled scientists and engineers–to observe distant galaxies. He teaches physics\, astronomy\, and environmental science at Rhodes College\, and bikes through Overton Park most days on his way to work. \n\n\n\n\nSold Out\n\n\n\n\nRegistration opens two weeks in advance! With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.

SUMMARY:Love for the Land: An evening with Brooks Lamb & Home Place Pastures
DESCRIPTION:Family farms have long been a foundation of the American food system\, and few people know and love their land like those who have tended it for generations. But with pressure from industrial agriculture\, land loss\, and climate change\, family farmers face challenges in both making a living and stewarding their land. \n\n\n\nOn December 4\, join Overton Park Conservancy for a conversation with Marshall Bartlett of Home Place Pastures and Brooks Lamb\, author of “Love for the Land: Lessons From Farmers Who Persist in Place.” They’ll discuss the role of community in sustainable farming\, as well as making the transition from row crops to regenerative grazing. Guests will also get to sample some delicious food from Home Place Pastures! \n\n\n\n\nBuy tickets here!

SUMMARY:Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy drinks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nUpcoming Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Corals to Cholera: Maladies in a Changing Planet \n\n\n\nAs weather patterns and human distribution change globally\, so does the fate of infectious agents: from pathogens that decimate coral reefs to the infamous agent of cholera. In this Science Café\, Dr. Salvador Almagro-Moreno will discuss the emergence\, spread\, and evolution of infectious diseases in a changing planet\, especially those in ocean ecosystems that are experiencing the most drastic changes of all. This presentation will not just be a call for action\, but will also offer insights into solutions and potential approaches to tackle these complex issues.  \n\n\n\nDr. Salvador Almagro-Moreno is an Associate Member in the Host-Microbe Interactions Department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His lab seeks to understand bacterial pathogens all the way from the molecular level to how they are transmitted to humans. The lab investigates how disruptions to ecosystems by manmade perturbations or natural disasters can change these pathogens and the severity of disease outbreaks. Understanding these qualities will help them better predict future outbreaks and design medical treatments against bacterial threats to human health.   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Send us an email  \n\n\n\nPlease review our cancellation policy here. \n\n\n\nOverton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012.

With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.
