SUMMARY:Third Thursday Treks
DESCRIPTION:Join Conservancy staff on a walk while we discuss a specific ecological concept for the month. Walks scheduled for the third Thursday of each month February-May at 4pm. Registration will be open a week before each walk. \n\n\n\n\nTracks and Signs: A Naturalist’s Exploration of the Forest\n\n\n\n\nStep into the hidden world of insects and invertebrates with magnifying glass in hand during this month’s Third Thursday Trek. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a leisurely walk through the Old Forest as we slow down and search for the remarkable evidence of tiny lives all around us. We’ll hunt for insect eggs\, feeding signs\, galls\, leaf mines\, webs\, cocoons\, droppings\, and shelters\, learning to read the forest like a naturalist. \n\n\n\nCome curious and with a willingness to get close to the mysterious!  \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrek surfaces may include paved road\, limestone gravel trail\, and Old Forest natural trails with uneven surfaces. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Send us an email  \n\n\n\nSee our cancellation policy. \n\n\n\nOverton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012. With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.

SUMMARY:Bumble Bee Atlas Community Science Workshop [Registration Closed]
DESCRIPTION:Some bumble bee species are disappearing—and we need your eyes and skills to help protect them. Join us for a training workshop for the Bumble Bee Atlas\, a community science project aimed at gathering data needed to track and conserve bumble bee.  \n\n\n\nDuring this indoor and outdoor field workshop\, you will be introduced to bumble bee ecology and conservation and how to participate in the Bumble Bee Atlas as a community scientist. You will learn how to catch\, photograph\, and identify bumble bees in the field. Together\, we’ll search the site for bumble bees and learn how to tell them apart from other bees. \n\n\n\nWe still have a lot to learn about Southeastern bumble bees\, so we need all the help we can get to document where they occur and what habitats and plants they are using.   \n\n\n\nRegistration deadline: Friday\, May 15th\, 9am \n\n\n\n\nRegistration Closed

SUMMARY:Science Café [Sold Out]
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy snacks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nTaking a Turtle’s Temperature: How do we know if a reptile is healthy?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReptiles\, including turtles\, snakes\, lizards\, and crocodilians\, have thrived on the planet for millions of years. Yet we know almost nothing about what signs indicate whether an individual or population is healthy. With many new threats and diseases affecting reptiles worldwide\, the race to understand the physiology of these incredible creatures is on!   \n\n\n\nDr. Neuman-Lee combines research in the field\, lab\, and with zoos to understand the underlying biology of immunity\, reproduction\, and stress response in reptiles. Come hear how studying these processes could help us protect these ancient creatures as they face new challenges. \n\n\n\nDr. Lorin (Lori) Neuman-Lee is an Associate Professor of Physiology at Arkansas State University in the Department of Biological Sciences. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in both Biology and English at Iowa State University\, a Master’s Degree in Biology at Eastern Illinois University\, and her PhD in Biology at Utah State University. Dr. Neuman-Lee has worked across the world with species as iconic as the Galapagos Marine Iguana and as home-grown as the red-eared slider turtle. She mentors students in the lab\, field\, and in the zoo to understand the physiology of reptiles. \n\n\n\nRegistration opens two weeks in advance! \n\n\n\n\nSold Out\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Science Café Waitlist\n Want us to let you know if a spot becomes available? With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Treks
DESCRIPTION:Honey\, I’m Home: The nitty gritty of bird migration\n\n\n\nEach spring and fall\, thousands of birds undertake one of nature’s most extraordinary feats: a treacherous journey across hemispheres. The Old Forest at Overton Park sits along the Mississippi Flyway\, a critical stopover where weary travelers find refuge before continuing their migration or settling for the season.Join us for Third Thursday Trek\, a guided walk where we’ll uncover the hidden strategies birds use to survive this perilous passage. Why do some species brave the risks while others stay put? How do they navigate thousands of miles? Discover why the Old Forest serves as a lifeline for these remarkable travelers. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegistration opens one week before the program.
