SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy snacks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nWhere have all the oaks gone? How tree species have changed in the Old Forest since Larry Finch coached the Tigers [Encore!].\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForests are dynamic ecosystems changing constantly in response to natural and human-induced disturbances\, climate change\, and introduced plants and animals. One of the most concerning trends in eastern deciduous forests has been the lack of oak recruitment and the potential loss of ecosystem value these foundational species provide. Studies abound on the potential causes and consequences of oak loss in rural forests\, however\, little is known about oak-dominated urban forests. In this talk\, Eric Bridges will discuss the changing species composition and stand structure in the Old Forest State Natural Area and what these changes might mean for the future of oaks and native biodiversity in this and other urban forests.  \n\n\n\nDr. Eric Bridges is the Director of Operations & Capital Improvements for the Overton Park Conservancy in Memphis\, TN. He earned his B.S. in Forestry from Colorado State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Forestry from Mississippi State University where he studied urban forest economics and urban forest dynamics. Eric is a Society of American Foresters (SAF) Certified Forester and an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist. He has worked as a professional forester for 35 years in Alaska\, Colorado\, California and Tennessee. Eric volunteers for the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council\, teaches community-based urban forestry courses\, and was a founding member of the Memphis Tree Board. \n\n\n\nThis event is sold out! With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Treks
DESCRIPTION:Long before the rise of AirBnB and Motel 6\, automobile travelers in the roaring twenties often sought refuge in tourist camps. Join us for a fascinating walk through the Old Forest as we explore our own Tourist Camp. \n\n\n\nFebruary’s Third Thursday Trek will delve into how this short-lived camp shaped the park’s natural landscape and ecological community today\, revealing the historical significance of human impact a century later. Let’s uncover the stories hidden in the forest together! \n\n\n\nRegistration opens one week in advance. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrek surfaces may include paved road\, limestone gravel trail\, and Old Forest natural trails with uneven surfaces. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Send us an email  \n\n\n\nOverton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012.

SUMMARY:Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy drinks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlash Floods: Rain\, Risk\, and Resilience\n\n\n\nFlash flooding\, known to scientists as Urban Pluvial Flooding\, is a type of sudden flooding that happens in cities due to heavy rain that falls very quickly—usually within a few minutes to a couple of hours. This intense precipitation creates a lot of stormwater\, which can lead to flooding either because water starts ponding in place\, or else because it overwhelms local drainage systems. As Memphians know\, flash floods can cause significant damage to property and even loss of life. \n\n\n\nIn this Science Café\, Dr. Claudio Meier will discuss urban resilience in the face of flooding\, and “grey” versus “green” stormwater management systems. He’ll also share insights he’s learned from his group’s research on quantifying extreme rainfall\, improving modeling\, and reducing the risks associated with urban pluvial flooding.  \n\n\n\nAs we approach World Water Day March 22nd\, this Science Café will highlight the critical importance of addressing flooding issues to ensure a sustainable future in our urban environments. \n\n\n\nDr. Claudio Meier is Professor of Civil Engineering at The University of Memphis. He is a fly fisherman who in his free time also happened to get a broad education as a Hydraulic-Hydrologic Engineer\, but with a twist (a PhD in River Ecology). He was digging streams in his backyard at age 9 (ouch\, those water bills…) and has never stopped researching hydraulics and hydrology since then. He has taught in Chile\, Mexico\, Italy\, and Tennessee\, and conducts research on extreme rainfall\, urban floods\, and river processes. \n\n\n\nRegistration opens 2 weeks in advance! \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Science Café Waitlist\n Want us to let you know if a spot becomes available? With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.
