SUMMARY:Echoes of Reflection: Spatial Polyphony and Antiphony
DESCRIPTION:Experience the museum as both a concert hall and a time machine in this special Horizon Series performance. Held in the Moss Gallery and inspired by its medieval artworks\, this all-instrumental program explores the ancient practices of polyphony and antiphony—sonic techniques that originated in sacred spaces and shaped the course of Western music. \n\n\n\nFrom the echoing halls of medieval cathedrals to the resonant chamber of the Moss Gallery\, musicians will create intricate layers of sound and spatial dialogue. Polyphony weaves together multiple melodies into one harmonious texture\, while antiphony engages in musical call-and-response that bounces across space. With no vocals\, every instrument becomes a voice—reviving the spirit of an era where music was both devotion and innovation. \n\n\n\nLove this event? Members get first access and discounted tickets to more than 400 programs and events each year. Join Art Club or a Collective today. \n\n\n\nFor $14 a month\, your whole family gets an all access pass to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art with a year full of things to do together. Plus\, you directly support the artists\, programs\, and creative energy shaping Memphis. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.brooksmuseum.org/join/memberships\n\n\n\n\nThe museum and all its programs are made possible by the generous support of museum members. SUMMARY:Art & Aperitifs: Paper Bullets and Queer Resistance with Jeffrey H Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Discover the ultimate story of queer art\, resistance\, and love as Dr. Jeffrey H Jackson\, author of Paper Bullets: Two Artists Who Risked Their Lives to Defy the Nazis\, sheds light on the story of artists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. These artists\, now known for their surrealist photos\, led a quiet but effective campaign against the Nazis by sowing seeds of doubt and mutiny amongst soldiers. Despite their ultimate capture\, the women stayed strong and confronted their captors\, even when faced with death. Dr. Jackson offers insights into their rebellion during this conversation about bravery in the face of injustice. \n\n\n\nJeffrey H. Jackson is Professor of History at Rhodes College and the author of Paper Bullets:  Two Artists Who Risked Their Lives to Defy the Nazis\, which was longlisted for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction and selected as an Editor’s Choice “Best of the Best” for 2020 by Booklist.  He is also the author of Paris Under Water:  How the City of Light Survived the Great Flood of 1910 and Making Jazz French:  Music and Modern Life in Interwar Paris. Jackson received his B.S. in history summa cum laude with High Honors from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Rochester. At Rhodes College\, he teaches courses in modern European history\, cultural history\, French history\, environmental studies\, and interdisciplinary humanities.  In 2011\, Jackson won the prestigious Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Research\, Rhodes’ highest honor for faculty.
