DESCRIPTION:There’s a Bird for Everyone! \n\n\n\nIs your top ten movie list filled with romantic films? Keep an eye out for the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and their elaborate courtship displays!Do you enjoy a good laugh at comedy clubs? Listen for the chuckles of the White-breasted Nuthatch as it creeps up the side of a tree. Are you singing along non-stop to the Wicked album? The Carolina Wren has a big voice packed into a compact size! \n\n\n\nWhether your Life List is competitive or your favorite bird is one served by Colonel Sanders\, you are invited to join us for Songbird Strolls! Twice a month\, we’ll venture out to see what the birds are up to in the Old Forest. Experience lively avian antics\, hear the magic of migration\, and get to know your most charismatic Overton Park residents. \n\n\n\nBYO binoculars or borrow ours! SUMMARY:Third Thursday Treks
DESCRIPTION:Join Conservancy staff on a walk while we discuss a specific ecological concept for the month. Walks scheduled for the third Thursday of each month in the spring and fall. \n\n\n\nWho Runs the World? Squirrels!\n\n\n\nThey’re here\, they’re there\, they’re everywhere! But did you know this wasn’t always the case?  \n\n\n\nIn this month’s Third Thursday Trek\, we’ll explore the history of urban squirrels and how they became one of the most beloved (infamous?) city slickers. By the end of our time\, you’ll decide: public pet or public pest? \n\n\n\nThis program will be held on natural and pavement surfaces.   \n\n\n\nThis event is pay-what-you-can\, with a suggested contribution of $5 per person.   \n\n\n\nRegister here. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrek surfaces may include paved road\, limestone gravel trail\, and Old Forest natural trails with uneven surfaces. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Send us an email  \n\n\n\nSee our cancellation policy. \n\n\n\nOverton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012. With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.

SUMMARY:Forged Connections: Early Medieval Bladesmithing and Metallurgy with Dr. Andrew Welton
DESCRIPTION:Forged Connections is the Metal Museum’s after-hours conversation series exploring how metal connects art\, people\, place\, and everyday life. Each month\, artists\, metalsmiths\, scholars\, community partners\, and professionals from fields such as engineering\, design\, public art\, preservation\, and city planning come together for accessible conversations about the role metal plays in our communities. From jewelry and sculpture to bridges\, buildings\, tools\, and public spaces\, Forged Connections invites lifelong learners to look more closely at the material world around them.Join Dr. Andrew Welton for an after-hours talk on pattern-welded swords\, early medieval metallurgy\, and the relationship between swordsmiths and the warriors who carried their work into combat. Drawing on a decade of hands-on experimental archaeology\, including smelting iron in medieval-style furnaces and forging recreated blades\, Welton will explore why smiths used this difficult technique even when it offered no clear performance advantage. This talk is designed for anyone interested in the connections among metalworking\, materials science\, and the history of bladesmithing.
