SUMMARY:Science Café [Sold Out]
DESCRIPTION:Unwind after the workday at Science Café\, a happy hour series hosted by Overton Park Conservancy at the Golf Clubhouse. Enjoy snacks and discussion with guest speakers who share fresh perspectives from the world of science. No background knowledge needed—just curiosity! \n\n\n\nBuilding a Buzz: Community Science for Mason Bee Health and Diversity\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Save the Bees” is a phrase used in many campaigns to raise awareness and promote solutions for aiding bee populations threatened by habitat loss\, climate change\, and disease dynamics. In this encore Science Café\, we will explore the broader diversity of bees in North America and all over the world\, the roles bees have in shaping life on Earth as we know it\, and how we can promote bee health and diversity in a time when their persistence in the landscape is imperiled. We’ll take a close look at a case study of mason bees to see the drivers of bee decline in action and discuss how community scientists can take part in monitoring bee health and diversity. \n\n\n\nDr. Kate LeCroy joined the faculty at Rhodes College after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University. Kate studies non-native mason bee proliferation and native mason bee population declines\, partnering with hundreds of community scientists to make this research possible. Kate is eager to continue evaluating mason bee health and diversity in the Mid South by building community science partnerships. \n\n\n\nRegistration opens two weeks in advance! \n\n\n\n\nSold Out\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Science Café Waitlist\n Want us to let you know if a spot becomes available? SUMMARY:Ideas Over Lunch - Capturing the "Mystery of the Ordinary"
DESCRIPTION:How does a photographer capture the “Mystery of the Ordinary”? In this edition of Ideas Over Lunch\, Czech-American Photographer Annette Fournet take us through her practice and world travels. Fournet is known by her signature black and white style with unique and captivating composition. What looks otherworldly through the eyes of the artist could be an ordinary object transformed by her lens. \n\n\n\nAnnette Fournet lives in Memphis\, Tennessee and in Prague\, Czech Republic. She is currently teaching photography at the University of Memphis. \n\n\n\nIn the early 1990s Annette Fournet began to photograph in Eastern Europe. Fascinated by the atmosphere of ‘suspended time’ cause by the isolation of the Iron Curtain\, Fournet witnessed the many changes in the former Czech Republic following the ”Velvet Revolution.” She found herself photographing\, with a sense of nostalgia and regret\, the transition–the disappearance of conditions both good and bad in the onslaught of change. She continues to photograph in Eastern Europe and America\, investigating what the photographer C J Laughlin described as ”the mystery of the ordinary\,” and the beauty of things imperfect\, impermanent\, and incomplete\, the natural evolution of things from or toward nothingness \n\n\n\nExcerpt from her Bio on Thomas Dean Fine Art Website. (Thomasddeanfineart.com) \n\n\n\nBring your curiosity and your appetite—lunch must be pre-purchased with a ticket.

SUMMARY:Orion Financial Free Concert Series: Memphis Powerpop Festival
DESCRIPTION:MPPF Set Times:\n\n\n\n5:00-5:25- Joybomb \n\n\n\n5:40- 6:10- Your Academy  \n\n\n\n6:25- 7:00- Sonny Wilsons \n\n\n\n7:30-9:00- The Smithereens  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Smithereens:\n\n\n\nSince their formation in Carteret\, New Jersey in 1980\, The Smithereens have earned a reputation as one of America’s most enduring rock bands. Founding members Pat DiNizio (vocals/guitar)\, Jim Babjak (guitar/vocals)\, Mike Mesaros (bass/vocals)\, and Dennis Diken (drums/vocals) built a distinctive sound rooted in the melodic punch of the British Invasion\, fused with the raw energy of American garage rock. The result was a catalog of timeless songs that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide. \n\n\n\nThe band’s breakthrough came with the 1986 release of Especially for You\, featuring the modern rock classics “Blood and Roses” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep.” Critical acclaim and radio success soon followed with Green Thoughts (1988) and 11 (1989)\, albums that delivered charting singles including “Only a Memory\,” “A Girl Like You\,” and “Too Much Passion.” Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s\, The Smithereens became fixtures on MTV\, college radio\, and mainstream rock stations\, while touring extensively with artists such as Tom Petty\, Lou Reed\, and The Pretenders. \n\n\n\nCelebrated for their muscular live performances\, The Smithereens have always stayed true to their roots while expanding their reach. Their body of work includes not only original material but also acclaimed tributes to their musical heroes\, including full-length homages to The Beatles and The Who\, affirming their place in the lineage of classic rock. \n\n\n\nFollowing the passing of frontman Pat DiNizio in 2017\, Babjak\, Mesaros\, and Diken made the decision to honor his memory by continuing to perform and record. Joined by guest vocalists such as Robin Wilson (Gin Blossoms)\, John Cowsill (from the Cowsills & Beach Boys) and Marshall Crenshaw\, the band continues to bring their celebrated songs to both longtime fans and new generations.  The band’s latest album is THE LOST ALBUM featuring previously unreleased sessions with Pat DiNizio. \n\n\n\nToday\, The Smithereens stand as a vital\, influential force in American rock—defined by ringing guitars\, unforgettable hooks\, and a spirit of resilience that ensures their music remains as powerful and relevant as ever. \n\n\n\nArtist Socials:\n\n\n\nWEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM | SPOTIFY | YOUTUBE | APPLE MUSIC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Sonny Wilsons:\n\n\n\nThe Sonny Wilsons is the power pop project of Adam Yancey (Solo artist\, Afterglow\, The Chain Hopsons\, The Becky’s) and Allen Couch (East Link). \n\n\n\nAdam Yancey\, who gigged his way through flight school is\, and this is a direct quote\, “The only idiot in the world that got into the music business for the money. And the only idiot\, in the history of idiots\, which is a long list\, who had to fall back on a music career to become an airline pilot!” \n\n\n\nMulti-instrumentalist Allen Couch’s love of music began when he stumbled upon\, and subsequently appropriated\, his parent’s 8-track copy of Abbey Road. Yep\, he’s that old…. Thus began a lifelong appreciation for a well structured pop harmony. \n\n\n\nThey are joined by singer-songwriter-guitarist Danny McGreger (Lately David)\, singer-guitarist Chris Swenson (The Devil Brothers\, David Brookings Band\, Victor & The Spoils\, Megawhat\, Black Oak Arkansas) and bassist Johnny Norris (Crash Into June\, Your Academy). The Sonny Wilsons’ first album\, recorded at Ardent and High/Low studios with Jon Auer (Posies\, Big Star) producing\, will be released late summer of 2025.  \n\n\n\nArtist Socials:\n\n\n\nFACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM | BANDCAMP | SPOTIFY | APPLE MUSIC

SUMMARY:Shell Yeah! Benefit Series presents Booker T. Jones
DESCRIPTION:From an early age\, Booker T. Jones—“one of the legends of soul music” (The New Yorker)—was captivated by the magic of melody\, rhythm\, and harmony. So magnetic was the attraction\, in fact\, that by the time he turned sixteen\, he was\, incredibly\, already a working musician with a hit song to his name. \n\n\n\nAs part of the first house band for Stax Records\, he formed the category-defining group Booker T. & the MGs\, whose first recording\, “Green Onions\,” was an international sensation\, selling more than one million copies and winning a place among Rolling Stone’s top five hundred songs of all time. Not stopping there\, Jones continued to push soul music’s boundaries\, refining it to its essence and then injecting it into the nation’s bloodstream. Nearly five decades after he first made his entrance onto the scene\, Jones paved the way for modern soul music and is largely responsible for the genre’s rise and enduring popularity. \n\n\n\nFrom midcentury Memphis\, where the brutality of segregation was a stark backdrop to the loving\, supportive family and community in which he was raised\, to the creative hotbed of Beale Street\, the Harlem of the South; from his early friendship with figures such as Maurice White (who went on to form Earth\, Wind\, and Fire) to the complicated dynamics of the racially mixed MGs—Jones not only was a witness to revolutions but also wrote their soundtracks. His musical legacy includes enduring compositions such as “Time Is Tight\,” “Hip Hug-Her\,” and the oftensampled “Melting Pot” and collaborations with the likes of Otis Redding\, Wilson Pickett\, and Sam and Dave—and later Neil Young\, Bob Dylan\, Barbra Streisand\, Carlos Santana\, and Willie Nelson. \n\n\n\nYears in the making\, this unforgettable personal journey is so much more than just a musician’s tale. Indeed\, Time Is Tight is both the definitive account of one of modern music’s most influential eras and also a necessary addition to the canon of literature about American music. \n\n\n\nBooker T. Jones is an American multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, record producer\, and arranger. Best known as the front man of the band Booker T. & the MGs\, he has worked with countless award-winning artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and has earned a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Along with the band\, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Jones continues to record and tour internationally\, both as a solo artist and as head of Booker T.’s Stax Revue. \n\n\n\nPrice\n\n\n\n$25 GA$50 VIP \n\n\n\nVIP Ticket purchases include party deck access\, private bar\, bourbon tastings\, Wiseacre beer\, and more. \n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS
