SUMMARY:Prime Practice: Watercolor with John Isaiah Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Your creative prime can begin at any age. You’re invited to get immersed into the artist process and build new skills through eight weeks of hands-on making.\n\n\n\nPrime Practice is an eight-week studio course for adults 55 and older who are ready to try something new\, strengthen their skills and connect with others. Choose printmaking with Vince Long\, watercolor with John Isaiah Kennedy or both. \n\n\n\nRegular creative practice can support well-being far beyond the studio. \n\n\n\nNo previous art experience is required. Materials are included\, and each two-hour session is designed to make participation comfortable and approachable. \n\n\n\nWatercolor with John Isaiah Kennedy\n\n\n\nGo behind the scenes of John Isaiah Kennedy’s practice and learn how he builds images through color\, pattern and repetition. \n\n\n\nParticipants will study watercolor techniques and color theory before creating two finished works inspired by Kennedy’s signature styles: one based on quilt patterns and another influenced by pixel art and classic video game sprites. The class will also contribute to a larger collaborative work that Kennedy will complete in his studio. \n\n\n\nKennedy earned his BFA in studio art from the University of Tennessee at Martin and his MFA in painting from the University of Memphis. His practice includes painting\, printmaking\, collage\, sculpture\, installation\, illustration\, photography and video. \n\n\n\nDesigned with accessibility in mind\n\n\n\nPrime Practice is designed to support a range of visual\, mobility and fine-motor needs. Course materials will use large\, easy-to-read text\, and projects will avoid small-scale or highly detailed work. Adaptive tools\, including large-grip paintbrushes\, will be available\, and guide lines will be provided for the pixel-based watercolor project. \n\n\n\nMost activities can be completed while seated\, with little to no standing required. \n\n\n\nAugust 19th–October 7thEight weekly two-hour sessions per course$250 for members | $375 for non-membersAll materials included

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Treks [Sold Out]
DESCRIPTION:Changing the Channel: Getting to know Lick Creek\n\n\n\nOnce a naturally meandering waterway\, Lick Creek is now a channelized part of our modern urban storm drain system. However\, its history as a floodplain remains visible in the Old Forest. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this month’s Third Thursday Trek through portions of the creek and Overton Park to explore how a single creek connects to larger watershed systems\, how human engineering has altered local forest ecosystems\, and what this means for the future of our forest. We’ll examine historical photographs\, maps\, and on-site observations to trace the creek’s transformation from natural waterway to urban conduit. \n\n\n\nCome curious and ready to drop down into the creek! \n\n\n\nThis program will begin at 5:15pm and will be held on natural surface trails\, limestone trails\, and pavement surfaces. We will be dropping down into the creek for a short portion of this walk\, requiring a drop and climb of about 4ft.  \n\n\n\n\nRegistration will open one week before the program.\n\n\n\n\n\nSold Out\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Trek Waitlist\n Want us to let you know if a spot becomes available?
