SUMMARY:Forged Connections: Early Medieval Bladesmithing and Metallurgy with Dr. Andrew Welton
DESCRIPTION:Forged Connections is the Metal Museum’s after-hours conversation series exploring how metal connects art\, people\, place\, and everyday life. Each month\, artists\, metalsmiths\, scholars\, community partners\, and professionals from fields such as engineering\, design\, public art\, preservation\, and city planning come together for accessible conversations about the role metal plays in our communities. From jewelry and sculpture to bridges\, buildings\, tools\, and public spaces\, Forged Connections invites lifelong learners to look more closely at the material world around them.Join Dr. Andrew Welton for an after-hours talk on pattern-welded swords\, early medieval metallurgy\, and the relationship between swordsmiths and the warriors who carried their work into combat. Drawing on a decade of hands-on experimental archaeology\, including smelting iron in medieval-style furnaces and forging recreated blades\, Welton will explore why smiths used this difficult technique even when it offered no clear performance advantage. This talk is designed for anyone interested in the connections among metalworking\, materials science\, and the history of bladesmithing.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Treks
DESCRIPTION:Join Conservancy staff on a walk while we discuss a specific ecological concept for the month. Walks scheduled for the third Thursday of each month in the spring and fall. \n\n\n\nWho Runs the World? Squirrels!\n\n\n\nThey’re here\, they’re there\, they’re everywhere! But did you know this wasn’t always the case?  \n\n\n\nIn this month’s Third Thursday Trek\, we’ll explore the history of urban squirrels and how they became one of the most beloved (infamous?) city slickers. By the end of our time\, you’ll decide: public pet or public pest? \n\n\n\nThis program will be held on natural and pavement surfaces.   \n\n\n\nThis event is pay-what-you-can\, with a suggested contribution of $5 per person.   \n\n\n\nRegister here. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrek surfaces may include paved road\, limestone gravel trail\, and Old Forest natural trails with uneven surfaces. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Send us an email  \n\n\n\nSee our cancellation policy. \n\n\n\nOverton Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that has been caring for Memphis’s central green space since 2012. With the generous support of our community\, we work each day to make the park a beautiful and welcoming place for all Memphians\, as well as a valuable source of urban habitat for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThe Conservancy must raise roughly 85% of our budget each year from people like you who care about the many things Overton Park has to offer. A gift of any amount helps us maintain and improve the park.

SUMMARY:Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Why Are Oaks Losing Ground? The Role of Fire in Their Persistence\n\n\n\nOnce common across much of the central and eastern United States\, open oak woodlands are disappearing as forests become denser and shadier. \n\n\n\nIn this Science Café\, Dr. Alexander examines the important relationship between oaks and fire\, how decades of fire exclusion have changed our forests\, and what can be done to restore these iconic ecosystems. Learn why oaks matter\, what is causing their decline\, and how fire may be part of the solution. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Heather Alexander is a professor of forest and fire ecology and the Dwain G. Luce Endowed Professor of Forestry at Auburn University. She teaches courses in forest ecology and fire management and studies how changing fire patterns affect forests. For more than 20 years\, her research has focused on the effects of fire on eastern U.S. forests\, and for over a decade\, she has studied wildfire impacts in Alaska and Siberia. She has published more than 90 scientific papers\, mentored over 30 graduate students\, and recently received the Distinguished Leader Award from the International Association of Fire Ecology. \n\n\n\nTickets for this Nature Zen Month Special Edition of Science Café are $30. Proceeds will benefit Overton Park Conservancy’s year round free and accessible environmental education programming. \n\n\n\n\nSold out \n\n\n\n\n \n \n Science Café Waitlist\n Want us to let you know if a spot becomes available?
